My love for soul music began at an early age from the early 60's listening to Motown records on my tiny transistor radio. Artists, to name a few included Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and The Supremes where amongst my first records.
Philadelphia International records from the 70’s captivated me too! Great artists such as Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes, The O’Jays, Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass and Jean Carn etc continued to uplift and motivate me.
I began my DJ career in between day jobs from 16 doing weddings and parties - moving on to guest appearances at East London bars from 18 onwards (1978!) From there I worked the Essex and East London club circuit, adding community radio to my experience. I’m now also part of the world famous Caister Soul Weekender DJ team and still a radio presenter for www.solarradio.com for over 12 years. Margate is just two hours from Essex and the vibe here is the exactly the same. It has always loved soul music and still has a great history of soulfulness thanks to The West Coast Bar and local DJ's. The Margate Carnival is a great opportunity to meet friends old and new. Here we continue to share our soulful passion with a diverse age group. Fantastic bands have appeared at the carnival including The Westcoast Soul Stars and Cool Million.
New music continues to excite me as it did back then and you're very welcome to join us!
One of Britain's most crucial DJs for soul and funk during the late '80s and '90s, Greg Edwards turned on London first at Radio 1 and later Capital Radio and in the late '90s, Jazz FM. Edwards, who gained experience working for CBS (during the reign of the O'Jays, Harold Melvin, the Three Degrees, and Billy Paul), started DJing for Radio 1 in the early '80s and, with the title of his show at Capital Radio coined the Soul Spectrum tag used by both BBE and Obsessive for a series of soul collections. After leaving Capital in 1987, Edwards returned to the airwaves in 1994 with the Bridge on Jazz FM, a slot that took him right into the next millennium. The 2002 compilation Soul Spectrum: Radio Sessions comprised an average setlist from the Capital Radio years.
Rare Groove ... acid jazz ... hippy house... Talking Loud ... the Balearic beat - all influential sounds, scenes and styles that went off with a BANGS ! No doubt about it, Chris Bangs has been a pioneering and inspirational figure in the British underground dance scene of the 80s and 90s and helped to light up the burgeoning black music dance scene of the early eighties. Bangs' name became associated with many celebrated events - from The Special Branch, Cock Happy and Doos At The Zoo to his own Bournemouth Bank Holiday sessions, the Caister, Prestatyn and Rockley Sands Weekenders and even the original Corfu and Ibiza 'summers of love'. Towards the end of the 80s, Chris really hit pay dirt as a musical trend -setter with the invention of acid jazz as a producer and artist responsible for many early recordings on Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz label and Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud (producing Galliano's celebrated debut album) His success internationally enabled Chris to set up his own studio and production company, Thin Air. His talents were soon spotted outside of the acid jazz scene with Paul Weller utilising Chris's production skills. Now Chris is making a comeback to the DJ brotherhood spinning Vinyl only !! He's been sorely missed, try asking the aforementioned Piller, Weller, or Peterson as well as the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling and many more for a genuine endorsement of one of our true pioneers.
